Icicles on your roof?

This time of year we see alot of homes with icicles hanging from the roof. I remember as kids we used to break them off and suck on them . Now I know that when you see icicles hanging from your roof you are actually seeing ice damming which is damaging the sheathing or wood under your shingles. This is caused by lack of ventillation in your attic, primarily at the eaves. Many times during an inspection I find insulation stuffed into the eaves which is blocking off ventillation. This is what is causing the ice damming problems. Remember the attic is how our homes breath. In winter months the attic should be cold!!  So the next time you see icicles forming ,check your attic insulation and make sure the eaves are not clogged with insulation.
